Upper School students have the opportunity to pick from a host of topics and experiences during advisory. This end of day time offers students a chance to meet with teachers, catch up on homework, or participate in an activity ranging from workouts to a cappella music.

Recess Isn’t Over Until the Last Ball’s Put Away

I’m going to editorialize for just a second. As the parent of a Middle Schooler, I am grateful that Harley believes in recess for this age group. I find it unbelievable that so many schools have done away with this. These kids need the break, dang it. ‘Nuf said.

Photos from a recent rainy, stormy day with an indoor recess.

It’s a Headrush, No It’s Club Rush!

Upper School aims to involve students in many ways beyond the academic day. Welcome to Club Rush when club leaders present about their clubs: what they do (or want to do), when/where they meet, and to recruit for new members! Clubs include: Yarn Bomb, Astronomy, Chess, Beyond Soup (service club), Biomimicry, Mandarin, and many more!

(And, in case you were wondering why there’s a Middle School student in this photo; Devlin is taking a quick moment during club rush to encourage students to join in a climate change walkout on 10/18. Also pictured, Chess Club matching wits.)

Kids Afield: Careful Observations of the Natural World

Kids Afield is a weekly outdoor expedition that gives our Kindergarten students a chance to engage with nature through the lens of a digital camera. Season to season, in sunshine or snow, the children explore the Harley campus and document their discoveries.

“It’s amazing to look at the world through their eyes. The things we think are ordinary are extraordinary to them!” says Lower School teacher Gail Hanss, noting that leading-edge research has shown direct exposure to nature fosters healthy childhood development – physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
