Punkin’ Chunkin’
From Christina Kerr, Grade 4 teacher:
Punkin’ Chunkin’ is a Grade 4 S.T.E.A.M. assignment. The goal of the assignment this year was to launch a candy pumpkin across the classroom and have it land in a cauldron. Students were put into groups of 2 or 3 and given a budget to work with and a list of supplies they could “buy” in order to build their launchers. Once the groups had purchased their supplies, they were given 45 minutes to build their machines.
When a group finished their machine they tested it and tweaked their designs, if necessary. On Halloween, the students took turns using their machines to launch candy pumpkins, trying to land them in the witch’s cauldron.
Creativity + The Entire Lower School, Grade 6 Band, and the Grade 12 Class = a Halloween Parade to Remember
Halloween is a BIG event at Harley! From the super-cuteness of Lower School students to faculty groups in themed costumes to our head of school dressed as Dumbledore, everyone is in on the fun.
Part of our tradition is the Halloween parade featuring the entire Lower School, aided by the tuneful marching sounds provided by Grade 6 band, and the senior class joining our youngest students in a celebratory trip around the school for a very enthusiastic audience of classmates, parents, grandparents, and other friends.
The Reviews Are in!
Do you know our Grade 2 students all become published authors? Mrs. Sharman and Mr. Cinquino teach the kids to storyboard, then draft, revise, edit, and publish stories of their own! What do they do after publishing? Read and review each other’s stories, of course!
Pictured here: An author and her reviewer (“I love it!”) postering the Lower School on behalf of a recently published book.
Planting the Acorns that Make Seniors Teary
Each spring, the graduating class and the rising Grade 1 students join together in our Oak Tree Ceremony. The event was started in 2001 by a Harley parent, Ellen Smith, who was inspired by the allegorical tale The Man Who Planted Trees by Jean Giono. Giving oak saplings that were grown from acorns harvested on Harley’s campus furthers the symbolism of our students’ journey from small acorn to mighty oak tree during their time at Harley.
Primary students gather the acorns in the fall, then plant them with the help of our Food and Farm Coordinator, Lisa Barker, so they are ready for Spring when the graduating seniors present the students with a sapling and words of wisdom.
Middle School Spirit Rocks
Middle School winds up for the excitement of Halloween followed by a day off of school with Spirit Week.
Each day brings another way to show off Middle School pride, whether wearing clothing the color designated for your grade or fuzzy-footed pajamas, these kids have got spirit down!
