This week (in photos) at Harley:
Project-based Learning, Up Close and In-person
Grade 3 makes an annual trip to Ed Fraser’s garlic farm as part of their Harlic Garlic project-based learning experience. If you are not familiar with the project, enjoy this short video.
Farmer Fraser shows different varieties of garlic and demonstrated ways to prepare the soil, plant, store, and cook the garlic. He’s terrific at engaging the children so they can share their knowledge and even offered garlic math questions. (For example, If garlic is planted 6 inches apart, how many cloves can be planted in three rows of 100 feet?)

September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month
The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society—and we do too!
Grade 6 Spanish classes engaged in a “Gallery Walk” to view Hispanic American Heritage Month projects completed by Harley Middle School students. After researching different subjects, students wrote bios, drew pictures, plotted their journeys, and assembled one page overviews to share.
Homecoming!
Special thanks to Parent Council for making this year’s celebrations even bigger and better than before!

All the Fall Pickins’
Lower School is full of that harvest feeling!
Primary 1 spent time in the garden with two upper school students, Tess and Cleo, who led them in garden tours. Then they all worked together to pick pumpkins that they planted last year.
And, from the co-teachers of Nursery Yellow, comes this delightful story:
This week brought an student-inspired apple adventure. When discussing, eating, and looking at pictures of apples, one student mentioned we could harvest them. This led to a conversation about what it means to harvest. We went on a walk to the Harley microfarm and lo-and-behold there was an apple tree with lots of apples ready to harvest! Everyone had an idea about what to do with them, but apple pie was definitely the most common theme. We learned how to use the apple peeler/corer machine and found that we love to eat apple peels! The resulting apple pie was not everyone’s favorite to eat but each student gave it a try, and the class really proud of all the hard work it took to make it!
Love it! Homecoming was indeed so much fun.Great soccer, yummy food trucks, bounce house, and the upper school bonfire was beautiful. Thanks also to Parent Council and Harley parent sommelier Joe Ellis for hosting alumni & parents for “Wine tasting on the porch” in front of our new Peckham Wellness Center.
