One Dazzling Campaign Kickoff!
For those of you who were able to attend in person, our Lives of Great Purpose campaign kickoff on Sunday was both moving and inspiring. We announced the final phase of our “Lives of Great Purpose” campaign, the largest fundraising campaign in the school’s history.
It is three times larger than any previous Harley fundraising campaign and focuses on three major areas: creating environments for learning, upholding our academic excellence, and extending the School’s strong financial position through continued support of the Harley Fund.
With $10 million raised in the campaign to-date, the final phase is focused on investing in Harley faculty by raising funds for increasing their compensation. This initiative for teachers kicked-off in March of 2018 with a $3 million gift from the Sands family—the largest gift in Harley history—was used to establish the Faculty Endowment, a fund devoted entirely to supporting teacher compensation.
On Monday, The Sands Family Foundation publicly announced it would match $1 million raised by the community as part of a new initiative known as the “The Sands Challenge for Faculty Compensation.” The match would bring the Faculty Endowment to $5 million, and the campaign total to $12 million.

Day of the Dead—to Life!
Grade 6-8 Spanish students have been learning about the Mexican tradition, Day of the Dead, that celebrates life and ancestors with color, food, and drink. Families often construct altars decorated with flowers, candles, pan de muerto, ceramic skulls, and—most importantly—pictures of loved ones.
Students created their own altar for display in the gallery so others could stop by and see their work.
Visiting Author/Illustrator Inspires in Lower School
Every year our Lower School hosts a visiting author for a day. This year our guest was author/illustrator Peter Catalanotto (of Robot & Monkey fame). He visited with the kids, made several drawings live (with input from the kids), and answered questions. Afterward, he held a signing at our book fair.
And Then This Happened…
Oh my goodness, snowflakes were spotted!

Upper School’s in the Weeds
Peter Hentschke’s Bio students recently built PVC quadrants in order to sample sections of the lawn so they could count the number of four different species of weeds present for a weed population study.
