Crêpes and Conversation

Harley’s Upper School has clubs to match pretty much any student interest, from astronomy to chess to Mandarin. (And if there isn’t one to your liking, you just might be able to start one!) This past week the French Club gathered make sweet and savory crepes, converse (in French), and enjoy the act of cooking together.

MLK Day On

MLK Day On is a day for Harley, Horizons, and the Greater Rochester communities to come together in a variety of projects, community service, and sharing. This year Middle and Upper School students and their families took part in team building activities, and interactive stations including: mural making, art, an interview booth, and cooking in the Commons kitchen. Lower School students joined in “Dr. MLK Day of Solidarity” that included drumming, spoken word, and other interactive activities.

 Learning by Doing

This week our Upper School Culinary Arts class was joined by Eli Martinez, a senior at School of the Arts and aspiring chef. Eli, who’s been cooking since age 10, shared his experiences learning to cook traditional Puerto Rican dishes from his great-grandmother. He taught the students how to prepare three of his favorites: Bacalao guisado (Cod Stew) Guineos En Escabeche (Green Banana Salad), and arroz con frijoles (rice and beans).

It’s a Little Breezy in Here!

Grades 6 and 8 science classes are combining forces for a wind energy project. Students are working on blade construction in the makerspace and testing different designs to see which can produce the most amount of energy. Variables include: length of blade, shape of blade, and number of blades. Final results and reporting will be on view at our Science Expo.

Sharing Talents at The Friendly Home

Grade 7 visits The Friendly Home every Thursday as part of health class. Students are encouraged to share their talents with the elderly friends they make. This week two students played the piano for a  small group of residents. They helped transport them down and back too. We try to create a dialog with some of the same folks each visit. I took a few candid shots today for you to have if you might like to use them.

Off to the Hundred Acre Woods

Our Nursery, Kindergarten, and Primary students traveled by bus and car to the magical Hundred Acre Woods where Winnie the Pooh and his friends work together as a team to help Eeyore find his missing tail. Students enjoyed a high-energy musical production by TYKES at the JCC.
