State of the School
As part of our state of the school, senior Andrew Alexis shared his Harley story. One of the many observations from our student body president inhis speech was, “In every level of this school, the teachers are tremendously invested in the lives of their students, showing that they are not only committed to shaping a student academically but as a whole as well.”
He really hit upon the core of Harley!
Yams: Meal and Symbol
Grade 9 History students have been reading “Things Fall Apart” as part of their World Political and Economic Systems trimester. The novel, first published in 1958, challenges Western notions of historical truth, as well as perceptions of pre-colonial and colonial Africa. Yams are a symbol of masculinity in the book, grown by the men to increase wealth, in addition to being a diet staple.
Students used the Commons kitchen to prepare recipes with yams to share with Upper School at lunch, including West African peanut soup.
Math and Technology
Channel 8 reporter James Gilbert was onsite recently to learn more about how technology plays a part in teaching math today. He interviewed several Grade 3 students as well as faculty member Margaret Tolhurst. They discussed ways we incorporate technology in Grade 3, how tools are evaluated, and why there are decided advantages to taking a non-tech approach to much of what we do in the classroom. At Harley we know technology is no substitute for learning from one another and collaborating to solve problems—human interaction comes first!
Operation Valentine
Grade 5 sent valentines to “Operation Valentine“—A 104-year-old Marine Corps veteran who asked strangers to send him Valentine’s Day cards this year (he has since received thousands of love notes).
Grade 5 will also write letters to Honor Flight and attend a welcome back celebration later this year.
Art Round Up!
Teacher Ell has provided the following updates on Lower School students’ work in art recently:
- Primary students finished glazing their clay mice and cats they made earlier this month and are also painting snowy owls with snow-splattered backgrounds..
- Grade 4 students are tracing their radial designs using the light from the window before transferring them to a printing plate. Pictured are the finished products.
- Grade 3 students are drawing heart designs inspired by multiple artists who use hearts in their art. They transferred their designs into aluminum using the embossing technique and finished their designs by coloring with sharpies.
